So, what good anime series are coming out in 2021?
Well, there are a few. But honestly, it has nothing on the god-tier level that winter anime 2021 has been.
Also, there happen to be a lot of sequels to series I’ve never watched before.
Luckily, between regular anime outlets and Netflix, it seems like it will be a good season.
Here’s what I’m looking at:
To Your Eternity [ 不滅のあなたへ]

I remember hearing about this a very long time ago.
According to the manga synopsis, it seems to be about an immortal god-like being whose purpose is to journey through life on earth and gain understanding.
(I’m getting strong Mushi-shi vibes from it.)
I’m not sure if this would be a very interesting anime to review on a weekly basis, but I will most likely be watching it on my own time.
(And subsequently reviewing the entire series once it ends.)

HIGEHIRO: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway [ひげを剃る。そして女子高生を拾う]

Okay so based on the title, I know what you are thinking with this one: it sounds problematic.
Especially coming from me, given my adverse stance on anything even slightly related to pedophilia.
But…I’ve heard that it has a solid story, and nothing creepy goes on. It’s just two broken people trying to deal with the world, and heal. Which I am all about seeing.
So…I’m going to be checking this one out. I may even pick it up to review weekly, and will read a few chapters of the light novel before the anime premiers in April.

Tokyo Revengers [東京リベンジャーズ]

I thought the premise of Tokyo Revengers sounded really cool but it reminds me a lot of…Erased?
Or at least, that’s what the synopsis sounds like.
Since the Crunchyroll trailer gave absolutely no context or voice acting for those who are coming into this series fresh without reading the manga.
Not trying to bash the company, but sometimes I really wonder what’s going through their marketing team’s head when they cut trailers like this….
Unless there was an AMV contest we all knew nothing about but were supposed to judge.
Watch the Japanese version of the trailer instead of CR’s. At least you can hear the voice acting and experience some emotional evocation with this one.
(Maybe this will be something I’ll watch in my spare time? Who knows. Excited to gather my first impressions when it comes out in April. )

Now for the Netflix animated series additions:
Dota: Dragon’s Blood (Season 1)
Now I’ve never played Dota, but this looks pretty fun.
I don’t know why, but there’s something about the characters in the Netflix animated originals having vague British/UK accents and the somewhat choppy CGI that is endearing to me.
I’m going to go out on a limb and conclude that the animation revolves around the video game…which I only know about based on a century’s old meme video.
Am I going to watch this anyways? Heck yes.
Why? Because it’s only eight episodes and I believe there are dragons in it. And dragons are pretty cool (and I enjoy watching them animated).
I know that’s a very baseline reason to watch a tv series but…with Netflix I enjoy turning my brain off sometimes and mindlessly watching a medieval-ish fantasy rpg in the form of a CGI animation masquerading as a Japanese anime animated by South Koreans with a British voice acting cast.
I guess this is what you would call a guilty pleasure? Haha ☺
Gokushufudou: The Way of the Househusband [極主夫道 ]

This one needs no explanation. It’s been getting a lot of buzz, not to mention the series recently had a very successful live action adaptation as a Jdrama.
I’m looking forward to watching a wholesome Yakuza anime series! Haha
And finally, last but not least –
Yasuke

I remember hearing the story of Yasuke a while ago, and that the late Chadwick Boseman was supposed to portray the samurai in a film coming out.
(Also, MAPPA seems to be animating this one, so hopefully they give it more care than they have given Eren Yeager this entire Attack on Titan season.)
I’ve been meaning to look into the actual story of this samurai as well. Maybe watching this anime will give me some motivation?
Haha.
Welp, I’m going to wrap this one up.
Honorable mention: Mars Red
I think most likely, I will be picking up and reviewing HIGEHIRO and Tokyo Revengers depending on how the first episodes go. But, what were your thoughts?
It’s a huge lineup coming out in a few weeks – which spring 2021 anime do you find most worthy of a watch?
