So, you’re telling me that Hikaru went to the mountain to perform the Indo family ritual as they had for over 300 years, saw a thick tree, got excited, slipped down the mountain, and died?
The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 4 Review
Wow, and here I thought somebody simply bumped Hikaru off because they wanted the Indo family male heirs out of the way to develop the land in the mountain’s restricted area.
It seems like Kohei told the others that there was a possibility that Lord Unuki could come down the mountain one day. I don’t know if the ritual was to prevent that, but I don’t think Kohei gathered that his son Hikaru would literally invite the entity to possess his body after his death.
Tanaka was right to call the Elder villagers out – they are all terrified of Lord Nonuki, yet still hold their folk festival under the secret guise of worshipping the deity. Apparently, the other neighboring villages to Kubitachi like Kibogayama, Udekari, and Ashidori have churches.

The vendor who gave Yoshiki, Kaoru, and Hikaru the Takoyaki for free was even wearing a cross, so I guess he was one of the outsiders mentioned who helps with the festival.
Speaking of the festival, did Hikaru break the barrier Tanaka gave one of his organs to erect?

Hikaru said it was annoying, and then there was an unspecified time skip and he was joining Yoshiki for shaved ice alone while Kaoru went to ask for more money from their mom despite being told by a vendor that kids eat for free. Maybe that was because people around town don’t like the Tsujinaka family and are actively trying to shun Kaoru for living like a shut-in?
Aside from the festival, we saw Kurebayashi exorcise the impurity that Asako warned Yuri about on the train tracks. I guess Asako does have a form of spiritual sight in clairaudience that she can hear impurities and other entities from beyond the barrier between worlds.
Asako definitely did hear “Hikaru” consume the other impurity that was trying to consume Yoshiki, and was gaslit by “Hikaru” for realizing what really went on.
Either way, I don’t think there’s much else to discuss concerning this episode, so tell me your thoughts – do you think how Hikaru died was dumb?

Why isn’t Kaoru attending school right now?
