Japan’s oldest folklore story The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, is reimagined by Director Shingo Yamashita in the upcoming Netflix original anime movie, Cosmic Princess Kaguya!.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Arrives on Earth in January 2026
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is an upcoming original anime film set to debut on Netflix January 22nd, 2026. This movie would mark Shingo Yamashita’s debut as a feature-length director after his acclaimed work on the anime opening sequences for Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen Season one, and the sci-fi romantic comedy series, Urusei Yatsura.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is set in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi, a decision that reconceptualizes the film based on Japan’s oldest folktale by integrating music, fantasy themes, and contemporary animation in its storytelling. The animation is being produced by Studio Colorido (known for their work on feature films Penguin Highway and A Whisker Away) in conjunction with Yamashita’s Studio Chromato.
“This is my first full-length original animated film,” Yamashita told Netflix, “I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film – so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!”
The film’s story unfolds under the backdrop of a live performance that blends original music with director Yamashita’s unmistakable stylistic use of emotive pacing, polished visuals, and dynamic 3D camerawork to boldly transform this classic tale and tailor it toward a new generation.
The voice cast includes Yuko Natsuyoshi (Maou Gakuin, Show By Rock!!) as Kaguya, Anna Nagase (Summer Time Rendering, Yurei Deco) as Iroha, and Saori Hayami (Demon Slayer, A Silent Voice, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) as Yachiyo.
Character designs are created by Hechima (Gakuen Idolmaster) and Akihiro Nagae (Drifting Home), and the soundtrack will feature music from prominent Vocaloid producers including: the creator of the Hatsune Miku hit “Melt” – ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot.
