So, when I began this series I didn’t realize it was an 18+ comic. It is listed on the website of course, but in my eagerness to jump into the story I was shocked around chapter 3 when things began to get…steamy.
Today is Halloween, so I thought what better way to celebrate than talking about a spooky story! A tale that could happen to any of us, at any time.
Even while we are at work, as the case of our protagonist Kim Dohyun.
The Warehouse [감금창고] is a 2016 webtoon written by Killer Whale. It follows Kim Dohyun, who is stuck in a dead-end job and has a habit of daydreaming. Whenever stressful events occur in his real life he mentally escapes back to his time in high school.
At this point in the series, it is unclear if Dohyun fell out with his old friend group, or if they simply drifted apart.
After an argument with a young man over a cell phone deal, Dohyun encounters a stranger who asks way too many questions. Personal questions, under the guise of imparting elderly wisdom. While trying to talk the stranger into a cell phone contract, he abruptly takes a call and leaves the store. Frustrated at losing two customers in a row, Dohyun goes out back and stands in a side alley for a quick smoke break.
His boss returns to the stop earlier than expected, and while attempting to put his cigarette out DoHyun is knocked unconscious.
When he awakens, he is alone in a warehouse.
A strange man tells him about his painstaking labor to recreate the space he has been locked up in. After an assault, Dohyun is taken to an isolated room on the other side of the warehouse. In these living quarters seemingly built specifically for the purpose of holding captives, Dohyun wonders how to escape.
I found this series (so far) to be especially terrifying because just hours earlier, Dohyun was at work minding his own business. Then just like that, a strange old man made inquiries, reported back to (presumably) the man who kidnapped Dohyun, and now he’s being held captive. Just like that. In broad daylight.
That is particularly terrifying to me. Hopefully the situation is terrifying to you as well.
Again, the series is on the mature side, but it should have situations psychological horror fans would enjoy.
Happy Halloween, Everyone!
What would you do if you were kidnapped like Kim Dohyun? Have you ever bore witness to anything strange happening in broad daylight? Why do you think he was targeted?
