Update for 01/13/2022 – Hey everyone, since this post consistently gets a lot of traffic, I just wanted to mention that I don’t really feel this way anymore. I’m pretty sure we are getting an Anime Original Ending, and I am working on a huge theory post with evidence.
Update for 03/27/2026 – I must be insane, because I feel like since Eren, Armin, and Mikasa have been on our minds “for 10 years, at least” – we must be getting a final anime route featuring the AnR ending.
If you’re interested, you can check out my thoughts and theories I’ve linked throughout this post to see my research process and where I’m going with all of this…and hopefully it finally pays off! ☺︎
The Final Fallout: Breaking Down the SnK Chapter 139 Extra Pages
The arrival of the final eight pages felt less like a traditional manga conclusion and more like a calculated demolition of the “happy ending” many fans thought they had secured (or reconciled with).
By jumping forward in time to witness the inevitable firestorm over Paradis, Isayama effectively stripped away the temporary peace of Armin’s alleged diplomacy to reveal a much harsher, cyclical reality.
These additions don’t just recontextualize the story, rather they reframe the entire series as a tragic meditation on the permanence of war and the haunting possibility that the Titan curse remains unbroken…
The Destruction of Paradis: Was Floch Right All Along?
The extra pages Isayama Hajime added to the final chapter of Attack on Titan are out and I’ve got to say – I really love them! And let’s be clear – I only love them because they showed consequences for The Alliance’s actions.
In the end, Floch was right – the enemies outside of Paradis Island needed to be destroyed. Even Erwin correctly deduced that the enemies across the sea needed to be wiped out, but failed to live long enough to give the Survey Corps a solid plan Hange could follow in his stead.
The Alliance’s Legacy: Armin’s “Talk-no-Jutsu” vs. Systemic Reality
The talk-no-jutsu of Armin Uzumaki may have worked during his lifetime, but (not) long after Paradis was bombed by outside forces. Which, for the record, I don’t know why some ‘fans’ are trying to reconcile this as a civil war destroying the island.
Last time we checked (I.e. ch 139), it seemed the island was still united under the Yeagerist faction, despite Eren’s death. He’d essentially become a martyr, and had a shrine that was still upkept at least in Mikasa and the Alliance’s lifetime.
So Eren Yeager’s will was still felt, even if he was not physically there.

Who is Beren? The Next Generation of Shingeki no Kyojin
The introduction of the character colloquially known as “Beren” serves as a polarizing final note, suggesting that despite Eren’s 80% genocide run of the Outside World, the cycle of the Titans is perhaps destined to repeat.
The appearance of a boy who could be a literal descendant of Jean and Mikasa’s bloodline union leaves an essence of “to be continued” to the storyline and its proposed time loop, rather than a definitive end to a series that has spanned multiple creative mediums over the last decade.
The Founding Tree Returns: Is the Power of the Titans Still Alive?
Speaking of unfinished stories…it would appear that titans still exist? Or at least, Eren’s titan still exists? Eren’s Founder tree looks very similar to Ymir’s Founding Tree that we saw back in manga chapter 122.

Paradis is in ruins, and I am guessing this kid (collectively called ‘Beren’ on Reddit and Twitter) ventured out to the ruins of the Eldian civilization with his trusty canine friend.
This would suggest that the “source of all living matter”, hallucigenia sparsa, is still floating around in the tree with Eren and or Ymir’s consciousness as the Founding Titan. The Beren kid also appears to be wearing pants similar to the old Survey Corps outfit – suggesting that he might be of Eldian descent.

The Ghost in the Machine: Titans and Genetic Memory
The return of the “Founding Tree” in the extra pages suggests that the Source of All Living Matter wasn’t destroyed, but merely dormant. To understand the biological horror behind the titan curse, explore:

Mikasa and Jean’s Lineage: Analyzing the “Jeankasa” Endgame
Some have theorized that he or she may be from Mikasa and Jean’s line due to the eyes, but I honestly can’t tell due to the shading.
Which reminds me – I am glad that out of everybody in The Alliance, Jean got a happy ending. He always wanted Mikasa (even if for superficial reasons), and Armin told Eren that a good guy might come and swoop up Mikasa, anyway.

I am totally fine with this ‘ship’ being endgame, because it makes the most sense to me. It also, unfortunately, makes sense that Mikasa would want to be buried with that ratty scarf Eren wrapped around her as a kid.
The Scarf and the Obsession: Mikasa Ackerman’s Character Arc
Because Isayama never fully developed her (or attempted to drive her character toward independence in the allegedly cut arc) – it is completely logical that Mikasa would have an unhealthy, lifelong obsession with Eren.
(And marry Eren’s replacement and doppleganger during military operations, Jean!)
Moving On or Staying Trapped? Eren’s Paths vs. Reality
I’m just glad that she didn’t sit by his grave each and every day, and essentially “never move on” which is what Eren’s implied wishes were in Chapter 139…despite the whole ‘dream sequence’ where Eren running away with Mikasa in the Cabin Timeline was the wrong PATH, and Eren flat out telling Mikasa to move on and let him go…before waking up again underneath That Tree on The Hill.

Not to mention Eren’s last canon words being “Mikasa…I’ve always hated you” which is why Mikasa had the whole hallucination/dream in the first place because she stated it “could not end like this”.
But….let me stop speaking on logic and facts. I can already hear the deranged EM shippers tapping at my window and making bird noises for pointing out flaws in an otherwise thematically sound 11-year saga.
Hmm let’s see…I think that was it for now.

Diverging Paths: Is the Manga Ending the Final Word?
For many fans, the destruction of Paradis in the extra pages was the ultimate proof that the timeline must be reset. If you’re looking for evidence of a different outcome, check out our theory hub:

Final Verdict: Did the Extra Pages Save or Sabotage the Series?
I am aware that I never posted a proper review of Chapter 139. Mainly because I was cycling through the seven stages of grief and trying to meme the pain away. Then it became a waiting game for Isayama’s author statement.
Then I heard about these extra 8 pages and decided to read them today.
I’m really hoping Beren: Shingeki the Next Generation doesn’t happen – although it seems the author has made room for that, now.
Mappa and Isayama: Addressing the Pressure to Change the Ending
Notice, I keep saying author and not mangaka because I am in the camp still under the impression that Isayama received pressure to change his initial ending, and final panel for the manga series.
I may as well have been a prophet because years later, at Anime NYC, Isayama expressed feeling stressed out about the ending he decided to draw….almost as if he had other intentions. Then if we re-read all of his contradictory interviews over the years concerning foreshadowing and the series’ ending…it raises more questions than answers.
I’ll go into all of this….soon. The dust is beginning to settle on the train wreck of The Fumbling, War for Paradis arc, Ellen’s character doing a complete 180 in a single chapter, and the Attack on Titan manga in general.
You’ll hear from me again soon regarding this story, even if it doesn’t make a good lot of you happy. But for now, I will again, leave it here.
Was the AOT ending rushed? Do you think the extra 8 pages harmed or helped the Shingeki no Kyojin manga overall?
And, Did Isayama receive pressure from publisher Kodansha to change the series ending at the last minute in an attempt to keep “all fans” happy and avoid controversy?
The Cost of Freedom and the Weight of Betrayal
Eren’s choice to trigger The Rumbling was a response to a world that left Paradis no other options. We analyze the psychological toll of this decision across these character studies:
