Ushio is Back from the Dead? – Summertime Render Ep 3 – 4 Review

As Ushio appears after her funeral, more questions loom surrounding Shinpei’s investigation of Hitogashima Island. Reviewing Ep 3 and 4 of Summertime Render.

Why did Shinpei originally see Ushio in a yukata before the outfit turned into the swimsuit she wore on the day of her death?

Summertime Render Episode 3 –  Solving the Mystery of Ushio Kofune’s Death?

Hmm okay so, maybe if I make a list of all odd events that occurred this episode, it will be easier to do this review?

The differences I observed are as followed:

Shinpei gets Ushio’s cell phone this time since Tetsu was not killed by a shadow.

Shinpei gets Ushio’s sea shell locket later on since so much was happening during his interactions with Mio.

Shinpei, for whatever reason, leaves Mio alone for a split second and turns his back on her in the rain to straighten a poster for the festival – which he claims he forgot about.

Tokiko’s presence in general, and how she was there the day Ushio died in Shinpei’s…out-of-body experience flashback? But Tokiko hasn’t said a word yet about the incident. Given, we haven’t seen much of her character anyway, but the Brock from Pokémon vibes she’s throwing out are making me uneasy.

Sou doesn’t remember the important thing he had to do after leaving Mio and Shinpei the day before, and says the “mountains, “Mesopotamian culture” secret code aloud while Tokiko is around.

Shinpei’s inner voice – or spirit watching his current body act – has an accent while Shinpei on the ground does not. I think Mio remarked as well that Shinpei lost his accent in nearly two years while in Tokyo.

Shinpei also seems to have memories of the timeline before when he spoke with the drunk inn-keeper at the Kofune restaurant and the man said they had a conversation before – which determined it was Shinpei’s shadow. Then…Shinpei has a flashback of the shadow that agent Hizuru was watching asking Shiori if she had recently saw a girl who looked just like her.

How does Shinpei have memories from his supposed shadow, and supposed self across multiple timelines?

Also, can Shinpei only see and interact with these shadows because something is special about him (or his eye after Ushio did something to it) and others like Shiomi can’t see them, I.e., the incident when the shadow’s disappeared during the Kobayakawa home investigation?

I’m now wondering as well, if the real Ushio is still alive and somehow that was just the shadow playing dead? I mean after all, we don’t know what happens to a shadow if they die – or if they even can perish.

Does another shadow come to take its place before zapping away the body? Does the person have to be freshly cloned again for the transfer to take place?

So many questions, so little answers. On to the next episode ~

Summertime Render Episode 4 – More Questions, and Still no Definitive Answers

…Didn’t agent Hizuru first say that she ate narezushi on the island of Hitogashima? Only to now say that the word narezushi doesn’t even exist on the island?

Why is Hizuru’s hair tied in a ponytail, and who was she recording voice memos for?

And why did Shinpei’s shadow take his phone? Will Shinpei now have to use Ushio’s phone? Who…he could have asked for the phone password when they were together.

…Is Ushio the shadow traitor that Mio’s shadow spoke of?

I’m guessing that at both the funeral and Kobayakawa home, Shinpei’s image was ‘taken’ because his memory loops make it hard for the shadows to know, or understand what he’s up to. Which would mean he is the outlier in this situation…I guess?

Wow, this episode was just such a mindfuck I’m not even sure what else to say.

The fact that Shinpei’s time loop theory got blown out of the water, Mio’s shadow didn’t really die when shot (but seemingly just glitched out and froze), and Ushio or her shadow is back from the dead with no recollection of doing the things she has previously done (like telling Shinpei to take care of Mio, giving his eye an upgrade, telling him to “find her”) is very odd, indeed.

I’m not sure what to make of any of it.

I wonder why Mio’s shadow hasn’t updated her ‘copy’ of the real person yet? Wouldn’t that be kind of bold to show up at a festival in the school uniform when the real person is wearing a pretty yukata?

And why did Shinpei originally see Ushio in a yukata before the outfit turned into the swimsuit she wore on the day of her death?

Just as the hunter Nezu told the ‘legend’ of the shadow sickness, the lore we received about things washing up on the beach having a spirit cannot be ignored. Especially when Ushio (shadow or not) has memories of drowning at sea.

Curiouser and Curiouser said Alice…

I think I’m going to leave this one here.

But…tell me your thoughts.

Is the current Ushio we are seeing is a shadow, or the real person reincarnated by the sea?

Do you think the shrine goddess is actual the mother the shadow’s referred to?

Why is the agent no longer talking about narezushi?

I write in my personal time and I haven't published much at all. I don't know if that qualifies me as a writer or not, but I'd like to change that. I have a deep passion for travel, cinema and (mainly) East Asian things, but I plan on writing various things to keep it spicy. Let's prosper together ~ よろしくおねがいします。
