So… is it Masa who is secretly plotting on the town’s demise and hoping that Tanaka destroys it all? Despite keeping the other elders from providing Tanaka with information that might actually help him exorcise Lord Nonuki back to the mountains?
The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 5 Review
Now why would Masa want to see the town destroyed? Was he the one who wanted the restricted mountain area developed, as well? I can’t remember if we ever got those guys names, and it’s using the manga character pictures on MAL so I can’t really tell who’s who.
Anywho, through a flashback of his parfait meeting with Kurebayashi, we learn that she did tell Yoshiki what “mixing” is. Despite knowing that the impurity would try to mingle his internal organs with his, Yoshiki invites Hikaru into the sketchy “Out of Bounds” classroom again after school to feel its insides.

Because apparently, Yoshiki is a freak and was thinking about Hikaru’s guts while marinating raw chicken to fry during home ec class. Side note – I saw on Twitter (X?) weeks ago that the staff actually cooked and fried up the marinated chicken picture they inserted into the anime.
Apparently, it was delicious.
Anywho times two, Yoshiki sticks his hand inside the monster’s guts and is surprised when it starts doing “monster-like things” and gets a creepy look on its face while trying to mix with him.
Yoshiki had his brain felt by the tentacle-like impurity, realized what he was doing was weird, and decided to back out of the sketchy situation. Meanwhile, Hikaru didn’t understand what the big deal was, since he thought it was a consensual mixing session. Yoshiki then reminds Hikaru to respect his boundaries and adhere to the Japanese standards of not causing trouble for other people – since Yoshiki was just curious apparently and Hikaru was getting off on Yoshiki’s hand deep inside his guts.

Oh, we had a cute interlude of Yuuta giving the doll Yoshiki won at the crane game to the girl in their home ec group whose fried chicken he ate up. A cute, wholesome rural high school romance scene amongst the creepy atmospheric horror of this backwater BL entity-possessing love story.
Anywho times three, it seems the plot remembered that Yoshiki has a sister and a mother so since the Summer Festival we’ve been getting them a lot more often onscreen. I remember Yoshiki has a father as well, since we saw his parents arguing over Kaoru not attending school while he was curled upon the bed in a fetal position mourning the death of his best friend and (desired) lover while lamenting his consideration of beginning romantic interactions with the entity that stole Hikaru’s body.
I guess it’s a typical Japanese household where the father is off working most of the day and is only present early mornings and late at night. I wonder if we’ll ever get Yoshiki’s father’s input on things?
Mainly like the wig ghost bathroom situation that Yoshiki was somehow surprised about despite Kurebayashi telling him he’d attract other impurities to him, and Hikaru literally telling him the exact same thing in the forest.

I think the impurity essentially trapped Yoshiki in a genjutsu, gave him a bad memory, and while Yoshiki thought he was living that out in a dream, the wig ghost impurity took possession of his body and attempted to use Yoshiki as a shield while attempting to kill Hikaru.
Hikaru probably should have told Yoshiki not to enter the bathroom no matter what he heard until he returned, but you live and you learn, I guess.
Yoshiki seems to think the impurity is learning to be more human, when in reality, he’s just learned how to hide his nature better while amongst humans.

But, tell me your thoughts: Do you think what Tanaka did with the blood and the bell will lure “Hikaru” to the mountain shrine?
Or, was that a summoning for whatever dormant entity is lying underneath the desecrated shrine?
