Retaking Wall Maria – Attack on Titan S3 Ep 13 Review

As the Survey Corps begin their operation to retake Wall Maria in Shiganshina District, Warriors Zeke, Bertholdt, and Reiner are already waiting to ambush them.

Welcome to my Attack on Titan Season 3 Episode 13 Review!

Just to start out, I should mention that after part Season 3 part 1 ended, I read the manga up until a certain point.

So for the most part (unless the adaptation deviates) I already know what is going to happen. I was nervous while watching and thought it would diminish my enjoyment, but thankfully it only enhanced it.

It’s always fun seeing a manga you enjoy be adapted; watching the characters come to life.

The Operation to Retake Wall Maria

We were even greeted with the usual monologue from Armin detailing the recap of events that lead up to this point. The Survey Corps is on a mission to retake Wall Maria and close the large hole created during the fall with help from Eren’s new hardening ability.

Within Shiganshina District lies Dr. Yeager’s basement, along with the secrets of their world. I am curious how long they will focus on the retrieval mission and its aftermath since we only have ten episodes.

Upon arriving at the wall near Shiganshina District, the scouts notice that something is terribly wrong. Armin correctly deduces that their mission to re-take Wall Maria had been foreseen and that Reiner and Bertholdt must be lurking nearby.

Commander Erwin gives Armin the authority to lead men into uncovering where the assailants from Marley might be hiding.

How Did Reiner Transfer His Consciousness?

While following Armin’s plan to check the walls for hollow spots in which someone could hide, an unidentified Survey Corps member finds Reiner – and is then killed by the former Corps soldier.

Levi engages Reiner and tries to murder him, but fails due to Reiner’s ability to transfer his consciousness from his brain to his nervous system – thus keeping him alive.

In retaliation for Reiner’s cover being blown, Zeke destroys the Survey Corps escape routes from Wall Maria while Bertholdt remains hidden from sight. Reiner then transforms into his Armored Titan to set the stage for next week’s elaborate battle sequence.

I am excited to see the effects of the battle on Reiner’s already proven unstable psyche.

Armin’s New Role in Season 3

I also love that Armin has a new role in the story.

Since Mikasa is the brawn and Eren is the (unreliable) muscle, Armin had yet to have a defined role. Sure, he has been the brains behind many operations but Armin finally has the authority and clout he needs to enact those brilliant strategies.

This episode was just set up so I don’t have anything else to say, but I’m looking forward to next week’s battle commencing!

Do you think Eren will win his next fight against Reiner?

What is your theory behind the secrets of the walls – including the titans inside?

Do you think Levi could take out Zeke in his beast titan form?

I write in my personal time and I haven't published much at all. I don't know if that qualifies me as a writer or not, but I'd like to change that. I have a deep passion for travel, cinema and (mainly) East Asian things, but I plan on writing various things to keep it spicy. Let's prosper together ~ よろしくおねがいします。
