Wow, I wish we’d gotten more of what’s going on in Yuka’s head earlier in the season.
We only have three episodes left – and just on contextual clues alone can finally ascertain what’s going on in their life.
So…it seems Yuka was inspired to pursue Japanese art because of her mother. The grandmother also supported it, and Yuka has been cross-dressing since she was at least seven years old.
Yuka has pretty dolls in her room, and her father does not support ‘that type’ of lifestyle. The mother supported Yuka doing whatever because they were pursuing art.
After voluntarily bombing the first exam (and not being invited back to the second one? I guess TUA staff took it as Yuka “wasting their time when other students would jump for the opportunity”) and essentially quitting art cram school instead of switching majors – her parents had it.
Maybe grandma went along with the disposal of Yuka’s things/room because it might spark a chance? Or that self-reflection Yuka refused to complete during the exam.
Yatora has now agreed to “drown” with Yuka for one night. Hopefully they don’t go too deep.
I honestly don’t think Yatora’s response to Yuka’s situation was all that bad.
He said he’d stay near the surface, but what if he couldn’t swim at all?
What if he’s practiced a perfect breaststroke for years, only to realize in open water that it doesn’t work against the strong currents?
When people panic in open water, they are more likely to drown.
Hopefully they (both Ryuji and Yatora) can learn how to float. That’s probably why Yatora stays on the sandy beaches, anyway.
(I use Ryuji here because Ryuji needs to deal with his emotional problems and stop hiding behind his ‘Yuka’ persona. That’s probably why he couldn’t draw Yuka’s self-portrait, because he puts on airs so much, he has forgotten who he really is. And being a low-class prostitute moonlighting as a “hostess” is only going to exacerbate his problems – not solve them.)

Is Kuwana’s sister really that great of an artist if her sketches are alluded to being the key to her successful TUA admission?
