An Emotionless Heart – Chainsaw Man Ep 9 – 10 Review

Aki struggles to adjust after Himeno’s death and decides to seek revenge. Denji realizes that he can no longer feel strong emotions within his heart.

I’m still a bit salty about Himeno’s death. Apparently so is Aki, since he’s willing to throw his life away when Himeno sacrificed herself to ensure that he would survive. Logic, eh?

Chainsaw Man Episode 9 Review

Public Safety Special Divisions 1 – 4 are wiped out, bringing the remaining agents under Makima’s control.

Makima Is Not Human

I think we’ve all but established that Makima is not human. Her pupils look like that of a devil, she pretty much anticipated an attack on all special divisions, and that power she displayed looked like more than a mere contract.

I wonder how her powers work.

It seems like she had some sort of Odin-type deal where she needed a raven to physically locate the target, and using the prison convicts she took their life energy in exchange for exterminating the target’s life. I don’t know if that makes sense, but it’s basically like the “law of equivalent exchange” from Full Metal Alchemist.

In theory, Makima never had the power to physically pull apart or “smush” those people from existence. So she had to ‘borrow’ that power from the convicts based on them speaking their names. Kotodama is an old form of Japanese magic that draws power from the speaking of names or certain words.

Or, maybe I’m just looking too much into the scene and it was just a special ability of hers.

Kobeni Saves Denji

Madoka stated that only “non-human” special division forces were left. I don’t know if this means Madoka himself wasn’t fully human, but judging by who we have left – Aki, Denji, Power, Makima, Kobeni – I’m beginning to think there’s more to Kobeni than meets the eye.

Did Kobeni really take down Katana Man and Sawatari just to save Denji with no ulterior motives?
Did Kobeni really take down Katana Man and Sawatari just to save Denji with no ulterior motives?

How was Kobeni an absolute wimp who drank toilet bowl water against the Eternity Devil when she suddenly is flipping around in the air like a damn shinobi? Did Kobeni make a contract with a devil during the time that’s passed since that incident?

Because there is absolutely no way Kobeni didn’t miss both shots she took at the old lady and Katana Man before crying and apologizing to Denji. Speaking of which…why didn’t Kobeni shoot Sawatari?

Is Kobeni another agent secretly working with the Gun Devil, as well?

Chainsaw Man Episode 10 Review

You know, when Denji wondered if he was a terrible person for feeling nothing from Himeno’s death, I thought that was valid. I liked Himeno a lot and thought it was sad how she died, but ultimately Himeno was somebody Denji just met who tried to sleep with him while drunk.

I like Aki a lot and feel bad for his character after learning his backstory, but he did beat up Denji when they first met.

I never cared for Makima and all she’s done is manipulate Denji with her sexuality.

Kobeni tried to kill Denji and sacrifice him to the Eternity Devil. Power led Denji to an abandoned house in a field, bonked him over the head, and tried to sacrifice him to the Bat Devil in exchange for her cat.

Denji isn’t a guy who’s had a lot of luck in life and although Pochita becoming his heart really may be affecting him emotionally, Denji is absolutely valid for not giving a damn about anybody in Public Safety. Maybe I’d feel differently if they all hadn’t attacked him first.

(Although, it was kind of screwed up that Denji took Aki’s get well soon apples. Man didn’t even have one bite and then the devil hunters working with Makima wanted to take the last one. Public Safety truly is a thankless job, huh?)

Kishibe Trains Denji And Power

Kishibe was Himeno’s mentor, right?

Denji and Power begin their training session with Kishibe
Denji and Power begin their training session with Kishibe

I like the guy, but Kishibe really illustrates just how dumb Denji and Power are. Like they are literally the same person at this point, from mannerisms to situational awareness as far as anyone is concerned. I get that Power is a Fiend and already speaks in an archaic manner, but is Denji really still that naïve about the world?

The ambush sequence was cool enough, but didn’t Denji consider that Kishibe would see his shadow before he could attack? Didn’t Power realize using a move that was all-or-nothing against somebody who brought you to the brink of death multiple times over the span of hours was too risky? Or rather, too ineffective?

Wasn’t Power roaming the wilderness just chilling and enjoying life before encountering Makima? She never had to defend herself before?

I don’t know, maybe I’m simply overthinking this scenario. Maybe Denji and Power just needed different glasses to wear. Yeah, now that I think about it – that was probably it.

Anyway, tell me your thoughts!

Kishibe really brought Power and Denji to the brink of death multiple times during the day, decided to go head home, and then made Denji and Power walk down an abandoned road in the middle of the night all bruised and bloodied. Savage
