Hikikomori Character Description:

Isao was excited to leave his sleepy village behind in favor of attending college in the big city. When he failed to make friends, he soon got depressed and felt like a failure. Rather than tell his parents and feel the shame of moving back home, he pretended to still attend University. Each night, he goes to the local convenience store and encounters a beautiful girl. The series Boku wa Mari no Naka “I’m Inside Mari” follows Isao as he believes he has “switched bodies” with the high schooler Yoshizaki Mari – and thus stalks and spies on “himself” throughout the remainder of the series.

How Isao Komori Became a Shut In or Hikikomori

Isao feels like a failure because he could not lead the life he envisioned.

Feeling shame, he then became a hikikomori. He spent his days inside playing video games and masturbating. Taking the money he received by parents for college and spending it on food and (assumably) his apartment. Garbage bags surround his living space, and there seems to be an apparent odor when Mari (the beautiful high schooler) and a friend (Yori) break in one day.

Later on in the series, Isao returns to his hometown and finds peace within himself.
