The Melnibonéan Legacy: Moorcock’s Sword and Sorcery Roots

Elric: The Sleeping Sorceress #1 Review:

I have not read any of Michael Moorcock’s work before this comic, and honestly, I’m not sure why it took me so long to do so until now. This story falls under the “Sword and Sorcery” subgenre in the same fashion as Conan the Barbarian, as this work draws inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s work.

I love dark fantasy book series like ASOIAF, the TV adaptation for Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon (thus far, despite season two mainly being comprised entirely of filler content), and lore-heavy, high fantasy and dark fantasy hybrid mixed video games like Skyrim and Elden Ring.

I’m not sure if this has always been a common theme in media, or if I’ve just now noticed because it’s a trend in what I’ve been watching lately, but there seemingly exist many stories set in a vast multiverse with a fabled land where warriors rest in respite from their misdeeds conducted in the mortal realm.

Moorcock’s multiverse isn’t the only pillar of pulp making waves this year. For a deeper look at the dark roots of the genre, our exclusive interview Beyond the Barbarian: Jim Zub on Conan’s Pulp Roots, Cthulhu Mythos, and New Legacy dives into how these legends continue to evolve for a modern audience.

Law vs. Chaos: The Existentialism of Elric’s World

The existentialism of Elric’s world, divided between the balance of “law” and “chaos”, is compelling, to say the least. Adding in ancient artefacts and a sentient, seemingly demon-possessed, rune-covered sword that is too vain to allow its wielder to perish, lest they suffer the bereavement of embarrassment at their wielder’s said failure, just further adds to the mystery and intrigue already housed within this long-beloved series.

I love the internal struggle Elric faces under duress by external factors beyond his control, and how that shapes his interactions with reality. For instance, Elric is a “Melnibonéan”, one from a race with pale skin descended from dragons (sounds familiar to Martin’s House Targaryen, no?) with a callous disposition toward those not of their society.

In his search for humanity, he has befriended Moonglum of Elwher, but also awakened the ire of Stormbringer, the aforementioned demon-possessed runesword.

Already at odds with the very nature encoded in his bones and the sentient sword that does not respect his newfound morality, Elric is now tasked with helping a Sorceress of Law by Rackhir the Red Archer, a man who claims to have known Elric before via the interconnected realms of the multiverse.

This mere possibility alone triggers a chain reaction that results in an intense culmination of various realities and choices converging all at once, in seemingly unstoppable, predestined ways.

I’m really enjoying this story, and suggest you check it out if you are also a fan of dark fantasy, Sword and Sorcery, or both Moorcock and Howard’s work.
