Classic Edition Review: Everyday Collecting & Interactive Card Designs

The KPop Demon Hunters Collectible Trading Cards Classic Edition features 5 cards per pack, 20 packs per box, and 24 boxes per carton. The appearance probability per pack configuration is 2R •1SR •1SSR •1HR/QR/UR or 2R •1SR •1SSR •1SR/ZR/CR with a production ratio of 10:20, or 10 out of 20 packs, respectively.

There are a total of 101 types, with 24 R, 18 SR, 8 SSR, 12 HR, 10 QR, 13 UR, 8 ZR, AND 8 CR.

I received 2 Classic Edition packs, and here is what I pulled:

Classic Edition pack 1 card pulls displaying a social media livestream card layout, a Sussie bird SR card, and a QR Saja Boys acrylic-style keychain card layout.
KPop Demon Hunters Classic Edition with QR Mystery Saja card

1 QR Mystery Saja, 2 R types for Mira and Jinu’s social media feed, 1 SR type with Sussie bird, and 1 SSR type with Romance Saja in his “Soda Pop” costume.

The SR Sussie card has a different branding design on the back of the card (a pink, white, and blue outline with a black background) than the other cards, which have white text with a blue background.

Breaking the Fourth Wall: The Camera Window and SNS Feed Effects

The SR cards also have a silver rectangle in the upper right corner, which according to Kayou’s Community Manager Timothy in a Reddit thread, are a “reflective finish” meant to mirror the card player’s “camera window”. Making it seem as if you were having a video call session with said character featured on the collectible trading cards.

(I wonder what Sussie would say to me? Would he just silently judge me as he continually did to everyone (especially Derpy Tiger) in the film?)

The second pack of the Classic Edition contained:

1 SSR Zoey in her “Golden” costume, 2 SR types with Romance Saja and Rumi, and 2 R types for Rumi’s social media feed.

Classic Edition pack 2 card pulls showcasing Rumi and Romance Saja video call style cards next to interactive simulated social media feed cards.

I think integrating the stills from the film on the cards gives the celebrity of Huntrix and the Saja Boys another dimension. Especially since their stardom spilled out into the real world last summer when the two K-pop groups were literally playing on the radio and battling for the dominance of their fans’ hearts.

The Classic Edition is ideal for everyday collecting and sharing, and the rarity type designs (especially the HR, SSR, SR, and R types) reflect that bubbly, fun fandom energy, and it helps in reliving your favorite scenes from the film on beautifully illustrated collectible cards.

It also breaks the fourth wall by making you feel like you are scrolling the characters’ SNS and IG pages, and seeing the world through their eyes with the interactive social media angle of those select cards.

Energy Edition Review: Premium Serialized Rarities for Superfans

The KPop Demon Hunters Collectible Trading Cards Energy Edition features 8 cards per pack, 12 packs per box, and 16 boxes per carton.

The appearance probability per pack configuration is:

  • 3SR•2SSR•1HR/TR•1QR/SR/LR•1UR/QR/SP for 8 out of 12 packs
  • 3SR•2SSR•1HR•1SR/LR+1SP/CR/BP/SE/SSR for 4 out of 12 packs

There are a total of 130 types, with 18 SR, 16 SSR, 24 HR, 24 QR, 8 TR, 13 UR, 6 LR, 6 SP, 8♢CR, 3 BP, and 4 SE types.

The Energy Edition Collectible Trading Cards feature several serialized rarities designed to cater to the collection needs of the superfans.

Here’s what I pulled after opening my 2 Energy Edition packs:

A collection of open Energy Edition pack 1 cards spread on a table highlighting Rumi, Abby, and Mira video call layouts alongside a holographic livestream card.
KPop Demon Hunters Energy Edition
  • 3 SSR type cards for Rumi’s Huntrix World Tour costume, Zoey in her “Golden” costume, and Baby Saja in his “Soda Pop” costume.
  • 4 SR types featuring Rumi, Mira, Abby Saja, and Romance Saja.
  • 1 HR Sussie card with a moving holographic motion for Sussie and the likes on the social media ‘livestream’ depicted in the scene. You can actually see the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ logo from the back of the card subtly reflected behind Sussie, which again adds to the meta-irl fandom hybrid feeling of the collectible trading cards.

The second pack of the Energy Edition contained:

A selection of open Kayou cards from the Energy Edition pack 2 including Celine, Zoey, and a Demon pilot card next to a Platinum booster sleeve.
KPop Demon Hunters Energy Edition with holographic ‘Rujinu’ card
  • 3 SSR type cards with Mystery Saja (“Soda Pop” costume), and Mystery Saja, and Baby Saja in their Grim Reaper costumes for their “Your Idol” set.
  • 1 HR type for Jinu and Rumi receiving the ‘Rujinu’ shipper fanart at the joint Huntrix-Saja Boy fan meet and greet that’s holographic (and apparently that moment had Derpy, Sussie, and the fangirl demon tuning into the live stream at that moment…).
  • 4 SR type cards with Celine, Demon (pilot), Zoey, and Mystery Saja.

As with the Classic Edition, the SR type cards for the Energy Edition also have a different branded color pattern on the back.

Classic vs. Energy Edition: Which Kayou Card Box Is Worth Buying?

Overall, both the Classic and Energy Edition of Kayou’s KPop Demon Hunters cards have unique rarities that can appeal to both casual and hardcore collectors. The price tag and their availability at major global retailers make these cards a great entry collection for fans of the Netflix franchise and collectors in general.

Fandom Expansion: Why I’m Keeping the Hunt Alive for Chase Cards

I actually plan to keep collecting both editions, since the Energy and Classic Edition QR types remind me a lot of keychains with their card design, and I enjoy collecting keychains in real life.

The rarer varieties (especially the Energy Edition CR, SP, LR, and UR types) are extremely interesting to me due to their varied art style, and I will definitely be trying my best to pull those when I purchase a box in the near future. Plus, I need at least one Derpy card, since he’s my favorite character from the movie! ☺︎

But, tell me your thoughts: have you picked up a box of Kayou’s KPop Demon Hunters Collectible Trading Cards yet? Which edition are you most excited to begin collecting?
