Does anybody else remember that iconic Wizard Chess scene towards the end of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone? That always stuck with me as a kid, and now nearly 25 years after that film’s premiere, we finally have a real-life version of Wizard Chess to play!
Bringing Wizard Chess to Life: Particula’s GoChess Wizard Air
Although I didn’t start reading the Harry Potter series until the fourth (and my favorite) book, Goblet of Fire, back in 2000, I could never fully visualize Ron Weasley’s favorite game while reading the novels. But now, I feel like I got a glimpse of their magical reality while playing with Particula’s GoChess Wizard Air – Standard Size Harry Potter Chess Set (Mini Model).
Note: I received this officially licensed chess board as a sample from Particula in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Particula for sending the “World’s Smartest Chess Board” my way!
Hands-On Gameplay & Real-Time Light Coaching
So full disclosure – I am very much a novice chess player. Which is a great scenario for this standard-sized chess board, since it uses light-up squares to help you play while giving you tips to learn and improve your overall strategy.

Smart Coaching for Novice & Pro Players
While you do have to move the pieces yourself, the interactive real-time light coaching, Bluetooth connectivity with the GoChess companion app, and adjustable difficulty and time limits make it feel less like you are playing against the Smart Board (as I did), and more so receiving aid from a benevolent force.

Seamless Bluetooth & App Integration
It was great, too, to see just how seamlessly integrated the GoChess app and Smart Board were while playing. I could lift a piece in anticipation of my next move, and it registered in real time on the board and phone app, simultaneously. There was no lag, no glitches, no errors, and no time-outs on my phone screen that would disrupt gameplay.

I ended up playing four games in a row, and when I finally looked up from my phone and the chess board, it was getting dark out.

Multi-Mode Play: AI Opponents & Global Online Matches
Aside from playing with another person or the smart board, the app allows you to play online and challenge 200+ million daily chess enthusiasts worldwide through Lichess.org and Chess.com.
The GoChess Wizard Air – Standard Size Harry Potter Chess Set allows all levels and generations of chess players, beginner or pro, to experience play in three main modes: 1 vs 1, 1 vs remote player (online), and 1 vs machine (AI).
The Smart Board connects to your mobile device via Bluetooth, and it uses the mobile device’s internet connection.
What’s in the Box: Specs, Battery Life & Storage
When first opening the box, it comes with the following items:

- A Chess Board
- Chess pieces (32)
- USB-C Charging Cable (1)

Battery Performance & Portability
In terms of battery life, you can get about 5 – 10 hours of play depending on usage, and the board generally needs about 2 hours of charging. The box even has a little rope handle that lets you pack the board back up for convenient storage or travel after use.
