Another World: GKIDS to Bring Record-Breaking Hong Kong Animated Feature to North American Theatres

The Academy-Award winning animation distributor and producer, GKIDS, has announced its plan to bring the dark fairytale animated film, Another World, to North American theatres. The film will appear in theatres in its original Cantonese with English subtitles beginning June 5th, 2026. GKIDS also revealed a new poster and trailer in anticipation of the theatrical release, while home entertainment details will be announced later this year.

A Historic Debut: Tommy Ng Kai Chung’s Vision for “Another World”

The millennium-spanning, fantasy drama is the directorial debut of Tommy Ng Kai Chung, written and produced by Polly Yeung Po Man, and produced by veteran film producer Chan Gin Kai. The filmmakers first released a 14-minute short in 2019, which garnered critical acclaim across international festivals and catalyzed the launch of the feature-length film.

Soul Keepers and Wraths: The Dark Fantasy Lore of the Afterlife

In this haunting universe, a “Soul Keeper” is a designated spirit tasked with guiding fragile human souls safely into their next life before they succumb to lingering earthly regrets.

However, when a soul’s unresolved rage and despair completely consume them, they transform into a destructive “Wrath” – a monstrous entity capable of bringing absolute annihilation to both the mortal world and the spirit realm.

The highly anticipated feature made its world premiere at the prestigious 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival as an Official Selection in the Midnight Specials section. This premiere marked the first time in over two decades that a Hong Kong animated feature has been invited to Annecy since My Life as McDull in 2003.

The dark fantasy film, Another World, is the winner of the 62nd Golden Horse Awards for Best Animated Feature, the highest-grossing Hong Kong Film of 2025, and the highest-grossing Hong Kong Animated Film in history.

Another World is an international collaboration spanning creative artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, France, and the Philippines.
