The Ribbon Hero is a new anime film inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s legendary manga, Princess Knight, and is set to premiere in August 2026 on Netflix.

Netflix Unveils ‘The Ribbon Hero’: A Bold New Vision for Osamu Tezuka’s Princess Knight

Osamu Tezuka’s classic manga Princess Knight is getting a new adaptation! The Ribbon Hero will stream worldwide on Netflix in August 2026. Netflix has released details on the main creative team working on the film, and revealed a teaser visual.

Reimagining the Foundation of Shoujo: From Princess Knight to The Ribbon Hero

Osamu Tezuka’s Princess Knight (Ribbon no Kishi) is widely considered to have set the blueprint for the modern-day magical girl heroine found within the shoujo manga romantic-drama universe. The Ribbon Hero reimagines this foundational legacy, the “first Japanese story manga for girls” for a new generation and audience, honoring the original’s roots based in the all-female theatrical troupe Takarazuka Revue, with a modern edge.

In the Princess Knight manga, Princess Sapphire was “born with both boy’s and girl’s mind due to a mischievous angel by the name of Tink”. As Tezuka spent his childhood in Takarazuka, this influence came out in the character of Sapphire, who embodies masculine traits but remains elegant and dignified while on her mission to fight evil.

The classic artwork shows Princess Sapphire in her signature red cape and wide-brimmed hat with a large ribbon, holding a fencing foil. Behind her stands a queen in a blue gown, and a small cherub-like character, Tink, is in the foreground. The style features the rounded, expressive 'Atom-style' character designs synonymous with the 'God of Manga'.

The announcement of The Ribbon Hero is a marker of a massive shift in the production landscape, potentially back toward female-driven stories. We recently explored the resurgence of the genre and the titles leading the charge in our editorial: Is Shoujo Anime Making A Comeback?.

Yuki Igarashi’s Feature Film Debut: From Jujutsu Kaisen to Studio OUTLINE

One of the industry’s most versatile animators, Yuki Igarashi, is directing the film. Igarashi received acclaim after being credited with completing the sophisticated animation of Jujutsu Kaisen Season one’s ending sequence as its sole key animator. His directorial debut, Star Wars: Visions – Lop & Ochō, received high praise in Japan and abroad for its delicate storytelling and dynamic action scenes.

The Ribbon Hero would mark Igarashi’s first time directing a feature-length film.

Director Igarashi has shared his thoughts on the project, stating:

“For this film, I poured in my respect for Osamu Tezuka, the creator of ‘Princess Knight’, for Ichizo Kobayashi of the Takarazuka Revue, which lies at the root of the work, and for the supreme, classic entertainment they brought into the world.

They also created their works while overcoming hardships such as infectious diseases and war, and those works became the very foundation of our culture. To everyone living in this era, I hope you enjoy this blood‑stirring, heart‑pounding piece of what I believe is ‘true’ mainstream entertainment.”
