The War for Paradis – Attack on Titan S4 Ep 17 Review

Pushed by Reiner, Marley makes an unanticipated bold move against Paradis, causing Eren Yeager to Attack. This is a review and discussion for AoT S4 Episode 17.

Rumbling, Rumbling, it’s coming

Rumbling, Rumbling 😝

Howdy one and all who have clicked on my Attack on Titan the Final Season Part 2 review!

And since that’s a mouth load to say (let alone type) this will most likely be the last time I use the full title for a while, haha ☺

So before I begin our analysis and recap, I just want to get something out of the way – As many returning readers and those who are familiar with my website will know, I read the manga.

And… I was very angry for a long time over how the series ended.

After spending over 7 months seething at how Isayama ended the series, I decided it was time to take a step back and really re-organize my feelings.

I decided to kill my ego and begin re-watching the series from episode one weeks ago, in order to completely throw out everything I once thought I knew.

I’ve noticed this trend in a lot of us who supported Eren, the Yeagerist, and The (100% full)  Rumbling . Some people in the fandom unfortunately haven’t come around (yet), and I don’t want to be one of those people.

Was I upset? Yes. Am I still upset? It depends on what day you ask me.

Either way, whether part 2 ends with chapter 131, and we get the rest in a movie or not – I want to enjoy how things are now. I’ll be going into this with a mindset that the manga and the anime are two separate timelines, and will treat them as such.

I’m not sure if I will be completely plot-spoiler-free, so this is just a warning to those who are anime-only that may stumble upon this post.

I would have thought my feelings would have changed, but I guess it’s just something still ingrained inside of me to support Eren.

To cheer on my favorite character, King Floch.

To wish to see the success of the Yeagerist, and victory on Paradis Island.

Unfortunately, no matter how much I try to kill my own egotism and innate arrogance, I still seem to wholeheartedly support the “villains” of this series.

So, I’m still with Eren. I’m still with Floch. I’m still tolerating Zeke. I still dislike Armin, and I still think Mikasa is a waste. I guess as much as things change, they eventually stay the same, eh?

But with all of that out of the way, this episode was a fantastic season premiere!

I’m already digging the theme of less censorship so that we can see everybody inside of their titans without (excessive amounts of) blur, and get extended shots of Zeke’s asscheeks.

The little details are what count in a series like this, and I’m glad that MAPPA and its production team seemed to put a lot of love into their craft.

You can definitely tell.

Pieck already feels like less off a prop and more of an actual warrior fighting and controlling a titan this season. AoT S4 Episode 17

I really enjoyed the Pieck sequence of her grabbing the cloth off of her anti titan gear harness during the Zeke has royal blood reveal. Her strapping up and being directed by another soldier to lift the gear higher in the background as Gabi reveals what she heard on the airship was a nice touch.

If there was any confusion, a mid-card lets us know that Pieck did indeed get new gear, and it is not a continuity error.

Along with the earlier scene of Porco slashing Pieck’s arm before she transforms, I’m really digging how alive the world feels.

The animation of Pieck (and Gabi’s) reaction to her hand being sliced off was wonderful.

Porco slices Pieck's hand off and both Gabi and Pieck are surprised. It's one thing to tell him to do it, it's another actually witnessing it done - glad they captured that situational horror accurately. AoT S4 Ep 17

Not wonderful that she got her arm chopped, of course – but it felt so natural watching her fall and then immediately transform, just for the camera focus to rapidly switch and catch Eren and Reiner fighting.

Again, the feeling of witnessing an immersive world with an active battlefield was wonderful.

Especially towards the end of the episode where Eren has this extended screaming sequence and a Survey Corps member is literally strangling a Marleyan with what appears to be broken ODM gear – only to be stabbed in the back by another Marleyan.

The chaos of the battlefield was captured perfectly, and a lot of Survey Corps members were shot.

Obviously things were added in for the adaptation, but this episode felt much different from the manga. Especially Eren and Reiner’s fight. I’m really excited to see what else has changed down along the line in our War for Paradis arc.

Eren’s facial expressions through his titan were also hilarious. I don’t know if it’s because MAPPA supposedly handled the 3D in-house, or just my perception but all of the titans are a lot more expressive.

When Yelena told Eren to jump out of his titan and go hide, the look on his face had me cracking up. Like Yelena really told Eren Yeager, the man who keeps moving forward, to run away and go hide? The audacity.

I’m sure Eren was slightly offended, and that’s why he got a running start and leapt off the building to go fight Reiner and Porco, haha.

Either way, this was a great start and I’m happy to have watched it.

“Eren’s friends” being let out of jail and the confrontation with Onyankopon was a lot smoother than I remember, and actually made sense for their characters. It sets up their conflict with not understanding Eren’s actions going forward, and why they may possibly do the crap they do in further episodes.

Anyway, tell me your thoughts.

I have a deep passion for travel, cinema and (mainly) East Asian things, but I plan on writing various things to keep it spicy. Let's prosper together ~ よろしくおねがいします。

  1. Great post! I like the thing when even after Yelena tells Eren to hide underground using WarHammer’s powers. He starts walking (Its so badass). And then he says It was you…Reiner. So badass scene of part 2 😀
