Mandrakes and Basilisks – Delicious in Dungeon Ep 2 Review

Senshi bends trap rooms to his will to cook a delicious monster dinner, much to the chagrin of Chilchuck. Marcille struggles to harvest mandrakes in the dungeon.

I really enjoyed episode 2’s focus on the new dynamics in the group now that Senshi was added, and how both Marcille and Chilchuck come to terms with this in their own ways.

Delicious in Dungeon Episode 2 Review

I was debating on whether or not to do a review for episode 2, but I kept thinking about the show and decided to continue on ☺.

Marcille’s Faulty Magic Academy Information Book?

Honestly still thinking about this days after watching the episode…what is up with Marcille’s textbook from her magic academy?

I understand that Marcille is a young elf and unlike Frieren, realizes the passage of time and doesn’t take things for granted. With that in consideration, I don’t quite understand why her textbook would recommend things she has no working knowledge of?

Especially considering the example of pulling mandrake roots without causing madness by the use of dogs…like where exactly did somebody come across that knowledge and consider it a viable method but provide no explanation?

(Unless they were an ancient elven mage who just thought it was ‘obvious’ because they were so out of touch with current life…then that would make more sense.)

Maybe the dogs are considered such simple-minded creatures in their world that the mandrake scream doesn’t cause madness (like the acute madness Marcille experienced from hearing a partial scream) or maybe canines are somehow immune to it?

Even so, why would the book not explain that and why were there no practical courses or fieldwork to demonstrate these things to young mages before they decide to traverse dangerous dungeons and caverns?

I know Senshi compliments Marcille’s harvested mandrake due to its superior texture and the medicinal qualities being kept intact, but it really bothers me that there are multiple ways to harvest these beings and Marcille has no real clue on why her method is yielded as superior (aside from the neutralized screaming side effect removing the bitterness).

Senshi is a Madman in the Kitchen

Never in my life would I expect to see adventurers not only eating in, but using trap rooms as a kitchen – yet here we are in Dungeon Meshi.

I liked the subplot of the episode focusing on both Marcille and Chilchuck’s struggle grappling with the new dynamics in their team with the addition of Senshi, but Senshi’s sheer willpower to cook any beast at his will completely overshadowed everything else for me.

Medicinal qualities aside, it seems Senshi may have also inspired other adventurers to enjoy dining on monsters inside dungeons. I keep hoping later on down the line we’ll see the two people they helped out due to the monster poisoning incident.

Also – why on earth did they call that creature a basilisk? It’s most certainly a cockatrice. As a basilisk destroys any creature that meets its gaze (like in Harry Potter).Unless, that is simply how the creature is known to the Japanese?

Let me know your thoughts on this episode, and if you believe Senshi is truly revolutionizing dungeon cooking in his world!
