Emma Needs to Stop – A Sign of Affection Ep 5 Review

Itsuomi invites Yuki over to his apartment and the two share a tender moment before Emma shows up. Kyouya and Rin spend time together.

I know she doesn’t know Yuki is deaf, but Emma is an entire clown for trying to flex staying the night at Itsuomi’s empty apartment in front of Yuki…while Itsuomi is trying to run away from her. Like, where are your proprieties, girl?

A Sign of Affection Episode 5 Review

I can’t get over how romantic this show is, or just how much I’ve missed shoujo anime. I mean wow, I feel like I’ve gone on an absolute roller coaster ride with Yuki based on the way Itsuomi has been acting, and felt like we took a sharp drop when Emma showed up.

Granted – It was clear that it was a misunderstanding, and Itsuomi seems to have zero interest in Emma. Kyouya even mentioned to Rin in the car that he’d never seen Itsuomi get so touchy-feely with a woman before and that Emma NEVER got that treatment from him. So it’s safe to say Emma has always been a hanger-on, and Itsuomi has never been feeling it.

Emma and Shin

Emma is so caught up on Itsuomi that she doesn’t even notice how terribly in love Shin is with her. I mean, Shin is literally sacrificing his liver each time she calls to pout about Itsuomi and you can 100% tell Shin doesn’t want to drink with Emma (or watch her drink her problems away). Not to mention the fact that Shin is most likely paying the bill for whatever extravagant things Emma is ordering at these restaurants to make herself feel better, not realizing that Shin is only doing it because he cares about Emma and wants her to be happy.

It’s actually really sad in a way, and I seriously hope we get an explanation soon of what exactly happened between Emma and Itsuomi. I mean – I totally understand why Emma would still be hung up on Itsuomi…he’s absolutely wonderful…but I don’t get why Itsuomi is so adamant in his rejection of her. It doesn’t seem like Itsuomi cares much about just ‘a pretty face’ like Emma although maybe it’s Emma’s personality that turns him off? Because Yuki is pretty as well, but she has such a sweet personality and I think that’s why Itsuomi is so drawn to her.

Especially that laugh scene…it was so cute! I thought Itsuomi’s heart was about to stop after hearing Yuki’s voice for the first time, haha.

Itsuomi and Yuki’s Alone Time

I just really loved everything about this episode. At first, I thought it was going a different route with Itsuomi immediately drinking, telling Yuki spending time with her makes him ‘sleepy’ and then putting his arm around her before “looking at his phone” (yeah, okay – we see you Itsuomi haha).

Kyouya was surprised that Yuki was at Itsuomi’s apartment, and I was surprised at how intimate the conversation had gotten between the (now) couple. In the last review, I mentioned that people like Itsuomi might travel a lot because they are running away from something – and with the family photo of Itsuomi, his father, and his little sister from three years ago, I wonder if Itsuomi was unsatisfied with his homelife in Germany and came to Japan to escape it?

Just going on the tone of the photograph, Itsuomi has black hair and dead eyes, and his father’s gaze was toward his little sister, who has light brown hair and was smiling happily up at their father. I don’t know what happened to Itsuomi’s mom, but I’m kind of willing to bet his little sister is a half-sibling, and his father remarried somebody in Germany and that is why they are still there, and Itsuomi left back to Japan.

I hope we can explore that more, and that Itsuomi keeps learning sign language – since he’s literally the only person Yuki has had a full conversation with in sign language in ages it seems. Also, I really hope Oushi realizes that Izumi might actually like him and that she’s the childhood friend he should be going for because Izumi has shown nothing but interest and we’ve only seen her twice.

Anyway, tell me your thoughts about this episode.

What do you think happened between Itsuomi and Emma? Why is Oushi still salty that Yuki is finally happy in her college life? Does Emma need to get a grip on reality?

  1. Once again, nailed it with this review! I can’t wait for the next episode! Obviously Ouishi can’t come to terms that he is absolutely in love with Yuki, so he turns to being a jerk to hide that fact. Itsuomi is just perfection. How he reacted to her laugh was everything! So freaking adorable!
