Senshi Loves Golem Gardening – Delicious in Dungeon Ep 4 Review

Orcs rob Laios and crew while trying to barter Senshi’s fresh vegetables. After being offered bread, the Orcs share the location of the Red Dragon.

I don’t know why I didn’t realize that all of the races in this world wouldn’t necessarily get along, and how accurate that is in a historical fantasy context. It’s little things like Orcs and Elves arguing centuries-old blood feuds while kneading bread, or dwarves using golems for gardening that makes me really appreciate Dungeon Meshi.

Delicious in Dungeon Episode 4 Review

I really enjoyed the worldbuilding and lore on display in this episode. I do not know why I didn’t realize the Elves and the Orcs wouldn’t get along, and that the Orcs and the Dwarves of course, would. Granted, I’m pretty sure (as Senshi mentioned), that had he not been doing his monthly shopping for ingredients when he overheard them bickering over supplies, Senshi never would have met the crew and they would still be wandering around the dungeon broke and hungry.

Senshi the Gardener

I really dig Senshi’s way of life. I’ve mentioned this before, but I myself am a gardener and although I’m not collecting human waste or anything like that, I can respect Senshi’s acknowledgment of the delicately balanced ecosystem within the dungeon.

Despite stating that he doesn’t sleep in his safe room, Senshi seems to spend a lot of time maintaining the balance of monsters, flora, and fauna on certain levels of the dungeon. I don’t know if adventurers ended up killing the other 7 golems that used to reside on the safe room floor, but the fact that Senshi continually brings them back to life the last 3 and lovingly gave them unique names says how much he cares for the ecosystem’s balance.

And the thing is…nobody would even know he’s been doing this if the adventuring gang never encountered him. Nobody on the higher levels of the dungeon or the old graveyard pays much attention to Senshi but he’s literally keeping them all safe and asks nothing in return. That’s very admirable albeit a bit lonely when you think about it.

The Elves vs the Orcs

I love how in every fantasy world the orcs are almost universally hated for their way of life. Not that it’s cool to see them walk into a bar and slaughter everybody in it, but I enjoy the accuracy of the orcs in this universe being extremely barbaric but within an understandable context in pursuit of self-preservation.

Marcille mentioned that the Elves helped drive the Orcs out from the surface world because the Orcs kept pillaging other races’ settlements. I guess it is just in their nature to be scavengers but I find it interesting that food really did end up being the great uniter in this world in a similar fashion to our own. Well that, and Marcille tricked the Orc’s son into believing his father promised the adventurers a good meal in exchange for cooking the bread.

This show surprises me in different ways each episode, and I’m excited to see what’s next.

But, tell me your thoughts – Do you think the Orcs could return to the surface world one day? Is Senshi the only dwarf left in the dungeon? Why is the Red Dragon no longer hibernating?
